Living in London is hard enough without the complexities and stress of moving house thrown in; if you do not know your way round London, hiring a self-hire van is going to make your stress levels raise even further.

Hiring a respectable company to help you to move house may be a better solution. However, do make sure that you hire a respectable company and not a rogue trader; there are many rogue traders who are more than willing to book a removal with you, take your money and run away without helping you to move house.

Hiring a respectable company will restore your faith in honest traders; help you to move with the least amount of stress possible.

What makes a good house removal company?

A good removal company will endeavor to make your experience as enjoyable and easy as possible. Of course there are horror stories floating around which should make you wary, but if you do your research, then you won’t be another statistic.

There are a few precautions that you should take when you are hiring a removal company:

  1. You need to know that they are going to turn up on time and on the right day; you do not want leaving in the lurch by a man and van company who are using a van illegally. Make sure the company is legitimate, reliable and has a good reputation.
  2. Are they insured? Public liability insurance, full vehicle insurance, accidental damage insurance do they have this? After all you do not want your new flat screen to arrive at the other end with a crack in it, then the man and van drive away with your money in their pocket leaving you with a £300 plus broken television.
  3. Is the van itself reliable? It is shocking when you realise that there are in excess of 7 million illegal vehicles driving on our roads here in the UK. Make sure that your man and van company is not one of those 7 million illegal vehicles.
  4. Is your driver reliable and helpful? If you have a typical low-priced removal service, then you may not get the help you need with your removal process such as helping you to unload. Some man and van companies are only interested in moving you from A to B; this is not what you want.
  5. OK! So what is the real price? If you are offered a very cheap quote in comparison to the others you have researched, then you may find that you will be hit with hidden charges at the other end. If the price sounds too good to be true, then the likelihood is that it is. A company which only charges about £30 for the service think about VAT, do they charge by the mile, by the litre of fuel, for loading and unloading etc.
  6. There are some companies which only have mobile numbers as a point of contact. If this is the case, why? You should make sure that if there is only a mobile number available, and then are they are registered company, with honest credentials. You do not want to put your worldly possessions in jeopardy by travelling with a company who are dodgy.

One last point of note before this article about house removals comes to a close, is that it has been suggested that spring and autumn are classed as the best times to move house.

The reason for this is that in the winter you will have the snow, rain and winds which will hinder your moving process or in the summer, the stifling heat and school holidays, meaning that children will hinder the process.
